The Faith I Need

“Jesus said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.’ Thomas answered him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” – John 20:27-28
O Giver of faith,
I don’t need to be the oak
whose majestic branches
shelter a multitude
Nor the redwood
whose glorious crown reaches for
heaven itself
Nor the cottonwood
whose fervent roots unfailingly drink
life giving water
But the small pine upon the ancient rock
living in one inch of soil
clinging to the crevice
the wound
as Thomas:
My Lord, my God
whose voice trembles above
the ruthless wind:
My rock, I am here
My rock, don’t let go
Amen.
