Science, Starvation, and Sacrifice
Posted on October 26, 2022 | Posted by Pastor Daniel
NOTE THE DATE CHANGE
During the final year of World War II, 36 men volunteered for an experiment that would change our understandings of the human body while also challenging our presumptions about ethics and service.
Faith Seeking Understanding, Ascension’s book club, will be discussing the Minnesota Starvation Experiment, and you’re invited to join. For this discussion, we’ll skip the reading and listen to three episodes of Malcolm Gladwell’s podcast “Revisionist History.” We’ll meet to discuss on Wednesday, November 30 from 7:30-8:30pm. We’ll meet at church, with an online option as well (https://us02web.zoom.us/j/8673682609). If you have questions, reach out to Pastor Daniel – d.smith@ascensioncos.org or 719-634-1694.
How to Listen
We’ll be listening to three episodes from season seven of Revisionist History: “The Department of Physiological Hygiene,” “The Rise of the Guinea Pigs,” and “The Mennonite National Anthem.”
You can find these on any podcast player/app. You can also listen online by clicking on the links above. Be sure to listen to them in the order listed!
How to Engage
Before listening to the episodes, I encourage you to reflect on these questions. Jot down your answers.
- When is it ethical to ask someone else to suffer?
- What makes an act of suffering a sacrifice?
- When has your own suffering helped you identify with another’s?
After listening to the episodes, look back at your answers. Do you think about these differently, now?
