Faith Isn’t a Contest

“A few years back Kristen got me this nice journal. Inscribed on the front page are the final words from our story, the note from the author: ‘These are written that you may come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.’
If that’s true, if the reason this Gospel was written was that we readers might have life-giving faith, then maybe we’re reading this Thomas story wrong. Maybe it isn’t meant to shame us into blind faith, which really just shames us out of faith. Maybe it’s written to give us faith.”
