On Sunday March 24, also Palm Sunday, Ascension’s choir invites you to the Choir Cantata, Dubois Seven Last Words. The Cantata is a poignant and spiritually rich composition that delves into the profound narrative of Jesus Christ’s final utterances on the cross. Composed in 1867 for Saint Clotilde in Paris, this masterful work captures the emotional intensity and theological significance of the seven statements attributed to Christ during his crucifixion. The cantata is divided into seven movements, each corresponding to one of these utterances, and features a powerful blend of choir, soloists, and orchestral accompaniment. Haydn’s genius is evident in the way he skillfully intertwines the expressive qualities of the music with the profound theological themes, creating a deeply moving and contemplative musical experience. “The Last Seven Words” stands as a testament to Haydn’s ability to translate profound religious narratives into a timeless and stirring musical composition.
