Reflections
A San Luis Adventure
Posted on October 19, 2021 | Posted by Mary Stoneback
On Saturday October 16, thirteen Ascension members and friends travelled to the town
of San Luis to enjoy a day of camaraderie, reflection, and inspiration. We ate
together in a former convent that was 121 years old, learned about the area, and
hiked the mile trail to the top of the Mesa. Along the way, one could not help but
be moved by the fourteen stations of the cross in bronze, depicting the final hours
of Jesus on earth. Kathy Mannerberg read the bible passages at each station
adding even more depth to the journey. The chapel at the top was co-located
with a fifteenth sculpture depicting the resurrected Jesus. The view of the town
and the valley from the chapel is a thing of beauty. Also at the top was a
memorial trail with busts of many of the victims of the 1926-1929 Cristero War, a
revolt against the anti-religious measures enacted by the Mexican government. At
the beginning of the trail is a wall with bullet holes carved in, depicting where
firing squads killed 90 Catholic priests. A total of 40,000 Christians were killed
during this period.
For those of us who attended, it was a day to get away from home, enjoy the
beauty and history of the area, and appreciate the sacrifices made for us. If there
is enough interest, we will repeat this trip next year. However, remember, you
can do this on your own. Any questions please contact Jim Deloughry
